MJ, the King of Pop.
I first see him when we were watching the 83 Grammy awards ceremony, being shown in India for the first time. It wasnt live, but then rock and roll and pop music, or rather western music was always a little slow to reach the shores of country half-way round the globe. The national television, Doordharshan had been previously playing a half-hour program on Rock, Pop and R&B for about a year or two. But the Grammys and Micheal Jackson had a big impact on us teenagers.
Beat It and Billie Jean the big two during this Grammys became an instant hit. The moonwalking, the crotch tugging and the leg shaking made into the different dance sequences in indian movies, all copying these steps and many times even mimicking his entire costume and getup, including the lone white glove. And soon other songs from MJ added to the playlist and favs of many of us.
MJ became something to look forward to every grammy award function after that. Because no one captured our imagination like he did. It wasnt just the music, it wasnt just the dance. It was everything rolled into together. He was one hell of an entertainer.
If i recall even his last big album ‘Invincible’ had some beautiful numbers, feeding the minds with different emotions. Between his big win at the Grammys and now he had captured many different peaks, setting many a records during the course of his career. Sadly he also feautred in news columns more than just his music. Towards the end of his life he was known more for these than for the masterpieces he crafted.
To me, now, he shall ever remain the King of Pop, and his Billie Jean remains my top favourite. The others that come very close are Black Or White, Heal the World, Cry, Thriller, Beat It, The Way You Make Me Feel, Remember the Time, Will you be There, The Girl is mine, Bad, Butterflies, I just cant stop loving you,…. oh actually the list goes on. Not to forget his part in bringing out, ‘We are the World’.
